COGfx primarily refers to a series of high-profile scientific studies (The COGfx Study) that explore how indoor environmental quality (IEQ) affects human cognitive function.

The name is a shorthand for “Cognitive Function Effects.” Conducted by researchers from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and other institutions, the study is famous for proving that “green” office environments significantly boost brain performance.

Key Findings of the COGfx Study

The research broke down how specific office conditions impact the way we think. Key highlights include:

  • Ventilation and CO2: Doubling the outdoor air ventilation rate led to an 8% increase in employee decision-making performance.
  • Green Certification: On average, employees in green-certified buildings saw 26% higher cognitive function scores compared to those in non-certified, high-performing buildings.
  • Crisis Response: One of the most dramatic findings showed a 73% improvement in crisis response scores for those in optimized indoor environments.
  • Sleep Quality: Better lighting and thermal control in these buildings led to 6.4% higher sleep quality for employees, which further boosted their cognitive scores the following day.

Why It Matters

Before these studies, “green building” was mostly about saving energy or water. COGfx shifted the conversation toward human-centric design, arguing that the biggest cost in any office is the people. By spending a few extra dollars per person on better ventilation (HVAC), companies can gain thousands of dollars in increased productivity.
