Outline for the INDEX Science Center: Research and Science-based Solutions
This is where we present research content (open access PDFs, links to studies, etc.) by topic, then INDEX Projects under each topic that provide solutions through applied science (applying the research). Under each INDEX Project, there will be links to related Workgroups, Councils or Committees, Progress Status using a gas gauge metaphor, Funding Goals with a gas gauge metaphor, a Donate to Project Button, and a Project Completion Date.
This structure is designed to be a “bridge” between high-level academic theory and boots-on-the-ground action. By using consistent visual metaphors like gas gauges, we create a sense of urgency and transparency for donors.

Topic Section Template
(Repeat this block for each scientific discipline)
1. [Topic Name: e.g., BEMI]
The Foundation: Research & Data
A curated library of the “Why” and “How” behind our work.
• Open Access PDF Library: Clickable cards with paper titles, authors, and 2-sentence abstracts.
• External Links: Direct access to peer-reviewed studies in journals like the Journal of Environmental Management and others.
• Scientific Briefs: 1-page “layman’s summaries” for non-academic stakeholders.
The Application: INDEX Projects
Transforming the research above into scalable solutions.
Project Alpha: [BEMI]
Executive Summary: A brief description of how Project BEMI applies the specific research papers listed to solve a real-world problem.

Visual & Functional Elements
Feature Design Treatment Purpose
Gas Gauges Dynamic CSS or SVG icons with “Empty” to “Full” gradients. High-speed cognitive processing of project health.
Topic Tags Color-coded labels (e.g., Green for Microbiology, Blue for Tech). Easy cross-referencing between related disciplines.
PDF Previews Hover-over thumbnails of the first page. Professionalism and instant validation of source material.

• General Science Fund: A “Donate to All” option for general research support.
• Submit Research: A portal for scientists to submit papers for consideration in the INDEX library.
• Contact the Science Center: Direct line to the Chief Science Officer (e.g., Robert W. Powitz) or Project Manager (Allen Rathey, Initially)
Science to Solution Workflows
At its core, the INDEX Science Center exists to solve the “Valley of Death”—the notorious gap in the innovation lifecycle where groundbreaking academic research stalls because it lacks the funding, specialized workforce, or logistical framework to become a real-world application.By prioritizing a “Science-to-Solution” workflow, we ensure that data doesn’t just sit in a repository; it serves as the literal blueprint for our active projects.

1. Validation and De-risking
Traditional philanthropy often funds “good ideas” that lack a rigorous evidentiary basis. INDEX flips this.
• The Research Foundation: Before a project is greenlit, it must be mapped to specific, peer-reviewed findings (the “Open Access PDFs” on our site).
• The Benefit: This de-risks the project for donors. When you see a Gas Gauge at 50% funding, you aren’t just betting on a vision; you are funding a solution that has already been validated by the scientific community.

2. Structural Accountability
The “Science-to-Solution” model creates a closed-loop system of accountability. Most organizations separate their “thinkers” from their “doers.” INDEX integrates them through:
• Workgroups & Councils: Every project is overseen by the very scientists whose research inspired it.
• Applied Metrics: We don’t measure success by “awareness” or “engagement.” We measure it by the Progress Status of the applied science—moving the needle from a laboratory hypothesis to a functional community tool.

3. Accelerated Impact (The Flywheel Effect)
In a standard academic setting, it can take 17 years on average for clinical evidence to reach everyday practice. The INDEX workflow collapses this timeline.
Step Traditional Path INDEX “Science-to-Solution”
Discovery Published in a journal; archived. Published and immediately mapped to a Project.
Funding Multi-year grant applications. Real-time “Gas Gauge” crowdfunding.
Execution Disjointed pilot programs. Integrated Workgroups & Committee oversight.
Completion Often lacks a clear “end date.” Defined Project Completion Dates.

4. Radical Transparency for the Modern Donor
Modern stakeholders want to see the “mechanics” of change. By showing the Funding Goal right next to the Scientific Brief, INDEX provides a narrative of logic. You aren’t just “giving money”; you are providing the final $5,000 of “fuel” needed to turn specific papers on bioload, biofilm and biofilm as proxy, into a physical reality (e.g., BEMI Intervention Unit).
