Indoor Exposure Index (INDEX) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to applied science and training. The organization focuses on developing and applying indoor exposure indices to safeguard human health and safety. Key indices may include the IAQ Exposure Index, Surface Pathogen Exposure Index, Coefficient of Friction Exposure Index, and others.
Purpose
- Aggregate scientific research related to indoor exposures.
- Develop exposure indices, particularly the Localized Verified Exposure (LOVE) Index, to measure and manage indoor environmental quality in specific indoor areas.
- Validate and certify health-related science claims of products, facilitating informed decision-making for users to manage indoor exposures effectively.
- Educate, develop and certify INDEX Experts.
Structure
The organization operates under a well-designed management system:
- Interim Nonprofit Board of Directors (BOD): Dr. Gary Allread, Chris Arlen, Steve Ashkin, Dr. Chuck Gerba, Dr. RW Powitz, Perry Shimanoff, Dinesh Wadhwani, and Robert Woellner.
- Interim Executive Director: Allen Rathey leads the executive functions and oversees the implementation of INDEX’s strategies and goals with regular input from the INDEX BOD.

- Research and Development: Collaborates with academic institutions and government agencies to conduct research on indoor air quality (IAQ) and other vital indoor environmental factors. These partnerships can secure grants, funding, and foster the development of innovative, commercializable solutions.
- Consultant Development: Offers LOVE-based credentials for trainers, enabling them to assist clients in determining averaged localized verified exposures (LOVE Indexing).
